Treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis patients with alfacalcidol versus risedronate

چکیده

Introduction Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients are, as a consequence of their disease and its treatment, believed to have an increased risk for osteoporosis. As inhibitors of bone resorption, bisphosphonates are becoming widely used in the management of postmenopausal and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIO). Also vitamin D and calcium therapy has been used for the treatment of GIO. However, there was no head-to-head comparison of these two medicines for the treatment of GIO. The aim of our study was to evaluate the efficacy of the active metabolic alfacalcidol compared with the risedronate in patients with RA receiving glucocorticoids.

Comparative studies on effect of risedronate and alfacalcidol against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritic patients.

Osteoporosis is a common adverse reaction induced by glucocorticoid treatment. Bisphosphonate, vitamin D(3) (VD(3)) or vitamin K(2) (VK(2)) is recommended as first or second choice of drug for treatment of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis. In the present study, the treatment effect of risedronate against glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritic patients was compared with t...

Risedronate therapy for the prevention of steroid-induced osteoporosis in patients with minimal-change nephrotic syndrome.

BACKGROUND Minimal-change nephrotic syndrome (MCNS) is treated by the administration of prednisolone (PSL) at high doses. Steroid-induced osteoporosis is a serious adverse effect of this drug. METHODS Patients with MCNS were randomly assigned to two groups, the risedronate (2.5 mg/day) + alfacalcidol (0.25 µg/day) group (n=20) and the alfacalcidol (0.25 µg/day)-alone group (n=20). All the pat...

D-hormone analog alfacalcidol: an update on its role in post-menopausal osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis management.

Alfacalcidol (1-alpha-hydroxyvitamin D3) is a non-endogenous analog of vitamin D which can bypass the renal and intestinal regulatory mechanisms that control the production of calcitriol (1,25-hydroxyvitamin D3, the active form of vitamin D, D-Hormone). Alfacalcidol may be metabolized into calcitriol with a limited risk of hypercalcemia. Alfacalcidol and calcitriol have been evaluated in animal...
